Mashpee

Mashpee is a town in Barnstable County, MA, found on the western (upper) portion of Cape Cod. It’s bordered to the south by Nantucket Sound, and to the east, north, and west by the towns of Barnstable, Sandwich, and Falmouth.

In past decades, Mashpee was considered a pass-through town — a place many Cape Cod tourists simply traveled through to get to their final destination. That all changed with the opening of Mashpee Commons in 1986 and other developments that came after that.

Today, this town of 14,000 residents is a popular Cape Cod destination on its own, attracting visitors with its unique historic charm, miles of beaches, large ponds, and acres of wilderness and raw nature.

One of the most exciting events to happen here was the revitalization of the New Seabury community, which has now become a playground and leisure destination for wealthy Cape Cod homeowners and visitors, including the premier Private Golf Community: The Club at New Seabury.

Whether you’re looking for historic small town charm and rugged adventures, or prefer a more sophisticated lifestyle, Mashpee has something to offer you.

Mashpee’s history is closely tied to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, and the town today is the home and headquarters of most of the tribe. The Wampanoag culture can still be strongly felt around the town, with the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum considered as the “geographic core of the Mashpee Wampanoag people.”

The town is also home to the Old Indian Meeting House. Built in 1584, it is considered the oldest church on Cape Cod and the oldest Native American church in the US. Each year the Wampanoag hold a Powwow, showcasing both traditional and modern activities, as well as Native American craft.

Mashpee Commons serves as the community’s downtown. This open air shopping center is a redevelopment of the former New Seabury Shopping Center, which was expanded to become the major lifestyle destination it is today. Mashpee Commons is home to over 60 businesses, including boutique shops, fine dining and casual restaurants, a cinema, and more.

Mashpee has miles of beaches found along Nantucket Sound, Waquoit and Popponesset Bays, and four of the biggest ponds on Cape Cod. Kayaking, boating, and fishing are among the top water activities in the area.

There are miles of scenic hiking trails in the town, as well, including those found within the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge.

If you’re looking for the ultimate Cape Cod luxury lifestyle, New Seabury fits the bill. The community features two 18-hole waterfront golf courses, a 42,000 square foot clubhouse, serviced beach and cabanas, a tennis complex with 12 tennis courts, five star restaurants, and many more.
